Put More “Lead in Your Pencil”

Growing up in Detroit, MI I often heard the phrase "put more lead in your pencil." It’s a lighthearted, yet direct way of referring to having more firmness and vitality in one’s manhood. But as I discovered firsthand, there are moments in life when even the most disciplined and health-conscious man can face challenges in that area.

About fifteen years ago, I experienced a sudden bout of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). I found myself struggling with the frequent urge to urinate, and more frustratingly, I had difficulty achieving and maintaining an erection. At the time, I was in very good shape—ate right, exercised, and took care of myself. But this condition caught me off guard.

Naturally, I did what most men would do: I saw a urologist. After a brief consultation and a quick physical exam, he immediately recommended surgery. Caught off-guard and with little knowledge about the causes of this condition, I didn’t hesitate scheduling the surgery—I just wanted the problem gone. I didn’t want to feel the constant urgency to urinate. I didn’t want to stand at a urinal for what seemed like hours, only to finally start urinating after many men at adjacent urinals had come and gone. Embarrassing. Most importantly, I wanted my erections back.
